The basics

What is Level 1 Support Connection?

Support Connection is the first level of support coordination in the NDIS. It's short-term and hands-on: we help you make sense of your plan, find providers that suit you and get your supports up and running.

What makes Level 1 different is the goal. It's about building your own skills, so that over time you can choose providers, check service agreements and keep track of your budget with less help.

Who it suits

Is this right for you?

  • You've just received your first NDIS plan and aren't sure where to start
  • You know what supports you want but need help finding providers with availability
  • You'd like to learn to read your plan, budgets and service agreements yourself
  • Your situation is fairly settled and you don't need intensive, ongoing coordination
  • You've moved to a new area and need to connect with local providers
  • You'd like to manage more of your plan yourself in future

If you have lots of supports that need to work together, Level 2 Support Coordination may suit you better. You can compare the levels side by side.

How we help

What's included

Every plan is different, but Level 1 usually covers these six things.

Your plan in plain language

We go through each part of your plan with you, so you know what each budget is for and what it can be used for.

Finding the right providers

We help you research providers that match your goals, location and preferences. You choose.

Service agreements made simple

We explain what to look for before you sign, including rates, notice periods and cancellations.

Getting supports started

We help you make first contact and book initial appointments, and follow up if anything stalls.

Building your confidence

We show you how we do things, then support you to do them yourself, at your own pace.

Mainstream and local services

Not everything needs NDIS funding. We help you link in with health, education and local services too.

An example

How it looks in practice

Mia finds her feet with her first plan

Mia is 24 and lives with her mum in regional Victoria. She received her first NDIS plan after an autism diagnosis, and the document felt overwhelming.

Her coordinator met Mia and her mum at a local café. Together they went through the plan in plain language and wrote down Mia's three most important goals. Over the next few weeks, the coordinator helped Mia shortlist occupational therapists, make the calls herself and compare two service agreements.

By the end of her Support Connection, Mia had therapy underway, a simple budget tracker she understood, and the confidence to contact providers on her own.

How Level 1 is funded

Support Connection is funded from the Capacity Building budget in your NDIS plan, under Support Coordination. Your plan shows the level funded and the amount, and if it isn't there, you can ask for it at your next plan reassessment.

Common questions

Level 1 FAQs

How many hours of Support Connection will I get?

That depends on your plan. The NDIA decides the amount based on your situation and goals. We'll show you how many hours are funded and agree together how to use them, so the most important things happen first.

What happens when my Support Connection hours run out?

We talk about this early, so there are no surprises. Before your hours run low, we'll check how confident you feel and what's still left to do. If you still need help, we can support you to ask the NDIA to look at your plan again.

Is Level 1 only for people with a new plan?

No. It suits anyone who mainly needs help connecting with providers and building their own skills, whether it's your first plan or your fifth.

Will I be able to manage my plan myself afterwards?

That's the aim. Each step is a chance to learn, so by the end you'll know how to find providers, check agreements and track your budget. If you'd still like ongoing help, we can talk about Level 2.
